Anything written, such as a newspaper article, a blog, a short story, and even a "... For Dummies" book one might have sitting on their shelf, has an audience. Whoever is going to be reading that composition is the audience. Every book or composition has a different audience and authors have to tailor their writing style and language to fit that of their intended audience. There is no sense in writing a children's book with long, fancy words that an average kid wouldn't have a clue as to what they mean. An audience will be more comfortable and interested if they feel like the writing is specifically for them. Audience is a very important thing to remember when writing anything, but it is often overlooked. Think about what your audience knows, not just what you know.
Audience - knowing who you're writing to shapes how you write your genre or what genre you choose to write in
Rhetorical situation - context from which the text/genre arose (Time, purpose, audience, conflict, exigence)
